Mars Express, a European Space Agency mission to Mars, includes an orbiter spacecraft and a small lander module. The mission was successfully launched June 2, 2003, by a Soyuz rocket from Baikonur, Kazakhstan, and entered orbit around Mars December 25, 2003. One of the eight scientific instruments aboard is a joint investigation called Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface Ionosphere Sounding (MARSIS), which includes components designed and built at the University of Rome, the NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and The University of Iowa. The MARSIS co-investigator at The University of Iowa is Professor Donald Gurnett in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
