CASSINI RPWS Tour Planning Information
This page will be the location of graphical information generated for the purpose of helping to evaluate various sample tours on the basis of MAPS working group tour characteristics. Each of the entries in the table below repesents a tour which has been evaluated including the 92-01 tour and several of the sample tours developed by the mission design team. When compromise tours or other tours considered worth evaluating are made available, we will add those, as well. Also see Titan flyby analyses by Janet Luhmann.
Under each of the tours indicated in the table we will provide scatter plots and/or histograms which are intended to represent the coverage of the tour in radial distance, local time, latitude and other useful representations. Should you have comments, questions, or suggested additions, please contact william-kurth@uiowa.edu.
I have used the cassini_pos code generated at UCLA by Steve Joy (PDS) and Bryan Littlefield to generate the trajectory information. THANKS TO STEVE AND BRYAN! The coordinate system used is given below--directly from the file header:
Cassini trajectory data in MIMI Planning Frame coordinates in units of Saturn radii and radians. Saturn centered coordinate system, Z along the Saturn spin axis positive north X-Z plane contains the SUN positive towards the SUN, and Y completes the right-handed set. R is the Saturn -> S/C distance, Zenith angle is the 3-body (S/C - Saturn - Sun) and Local time is the projection of the 3-body angle into the orbital plane, measured counterclockwise from the Saturn anti-solar line. Rs = 62,268km.
Note that I have found that the above gives the "wrong" local time, hence, the plots below use (24 hours - local time) to give the proper answer.
Here is a memo describing some aspects of the T18-5 and T09-1 (and variants) tours analyzed below (.pdf).
